Cala Galdana is a family-friendly resort with a long, beautiful beach filled with white sand. It is located on the south coast of Menorca in a bay shaped a bit like a horseshoe. The water is clear and turquoise to the color. In some places there are incredible rock formations that have taken on their unique shape from the constant processing of the sea. The setting is fantastic and it is not difficult to get the right holiday feeling. Here are five must-sees for a tourist in Cala Galdana.
Sun and swimming on the beach
Many believe that Cala Galdana has Menorca’s finest sandy beach. It is shallow, the water is crystal clear and there are beautiful limestone cliffs in the background. The place is perfect for sunbathing and swimming. It is also possible to practice different water sports. A promenade runs along the entire area. If you go a little further past the cliffs, you can get to a slightly more secluded Cala Mitjana which is excellent for those who want to snorkel. In addition, there are all necessary facilities such as showers and toilets. During the high season, it is usually a little more crowded for the best places on the beach, but still much calmer than it usually is on the neighboring island of Mallorca.
Horseback riding and hiking
Take the opportunity to discover Menorca. With Cala Galdana as a base, you can travel around the island and see the fascinating nature. Along the coast there is a special hiking trail, known as the Cami de Cavalls. In principle, there are clearly marked trails where you can cycle, hike or ride. For cycling, it is best to rent a mountain bike, as the terrain is quite hilly. Another option is to book a guided hike or horseback ride. It is a safe and secure way to experience the best of the island.
Enjoy seafood
In Cala Galdana, according to Historyaah, it is common for restaurants to have seafood as their absolute specialty. Given the island of Menorca’s location in the Mediterranean, it is no direct surprise that the delicacies of the sea are at the center. The resort is quite small, but still there are about ten restaurants to choose from. Cala Galdana has a beautiful marina and also a perfectly okay range of bars and small shops. If you want better shopping, however, you must be prepared to travel to the capital Mahon or the former capital Ciutadella.
Watch an evening show
Almost every day there is something going on in Cala Galdana or the surrounding area. It can be about acrobatics, horse shows, musical entertainment or something else exciting. Especially during the high season, evening shows are organized that are worth seeing after a nice day at the beach. Several restaurants also have activities such as mini golf and children’s playgrounds. In short, there is never a shortage of entertainment.
Wine tasting
When you are in Menorca, it is a must to try the locally produced wines. On the island they are very proud of their wine and once in history there were over 1500 vineyards on the island. When it returned to Spanish ownership, there was a decline, but in recent decades, Menorca has returned in earnest. Wines from the island are marked with “Vin de la Terra Illa de Menorca” and typically it is red wine based on the grape varieties Carbernet Sauvignon or Merlot. Take the opportunity to visit a vineyard in the immediate area.
