Who Invented Sunglasses

Symbol of “cool” and style, the sunglasses that also serve to protect against UV rays have not always been a trend object it is today. They are much more than an accessory, but a separate suit, the first pairs of sunglasses dating back to ancient China, during the Roman period and Inuit tribes.

About the Sunglasses

Discover how this ancient carved object happened to your face in just a few hundred years …

Of Ancient Inuit

There are about 800 years, it is the Inuit who first developed the “Snow goggles” to deal with the sunlight and the harsh conditions of the Arctic. They were made from wood, bone or leather and had a slit for the eyes, consider this model as one of the first references to sunglasses in history.

However, in the 12th century in China old equipment increased from walrus ivory sunglasses flat quartz to protect the eyes against the glare. This is the first protection against UV; leaving even less light, Chinese judges wore these in the courts to conceal their facial expressions while questioning witnesses.

Similarly, some Roman emperors like Nero would have carried the first versions of sunglasses to watch the gladiators in the Coliseum, looking through polished gemstones to magnify and distort their vision to entertain a little.
Starting From The 15th Century-“the Years Syphilis”
These are of course the Italians who placed the sunglasses to a new rank 15th and 18th centuries by inventing lenses to correct sight. Their glasses were often tinged in green or blue to create greater contrast for people who are visually impaired.

These glasses were sold for the elderly in 1629 by the English company of Spectacle Makers Company (French: Glasses Manufacturers Correction) with the following catchphrase: “a blessing for the elderly.”

James Ayscough most famous and experienced optician in the 1750s is also often considered the inventor of eyeglasses.

As they improved the vision, very quickly the sunglasses were prescribed to people suffering from syphilis. This dark chapter in the history of sunglasses is often forgotten because of the scourge of this disease, brown hues, amber and yellow were chosen to protect patients against the sunlight, one of the most common symptoms syphilis being the extra light sensitivity.

Patients with syphilis who had lost their nose had a way to hide the deformations of their face due to metal prostheses supplied with the glasses-surely one of the least known uses.

In Victorian times, the sunglasses were becoming an accessory associated with sex and deviant behavior because of their affiliation with syphilis.

Made from metal, leather and bone, the design has also evolved with the first silk ribbons that acted as branches to keep the glasses in place and the strong branches invented by Edward Scarlett in the 1620s and invention of Benjamin Franklin with bifocal lenses in the 1780s.

20th Century-Birth Of Sunglasses Such As The You Know

In the 1920s, the sunglasses were actually used for legitimate purposes to protect against the sun. Sam Foster sunglasses Foster Grant was the first to mass-produce them and sell them in stores Woolworth near beaches and seashores of Atlantic City and New Jersey.

Eventually, Foster Grant continued to create glasses for the general public throughout the forties and fifties. However, in the 1930s, there was a major change …

Edwin Land scientist who worked on photographic technology, invented in 1937 polarized lenses. He actually adapted cameras technology to glasses and created the polarized filter is designed to enhance color and contrast, giving a vivid visual perspective.

This technology has become one of the most widely used by almost all manufacturers glasses methods; especially in the world of contemporary sport since it provides a transparent clear vision by enhancing the contrast and colors. The eyeglasses 1950s still exists today.

While Land creates a historic technology, inventing an iconic Ray Ban style. In 1935, the company Bausch and Lombinvented the first sunglasses for pilots of the Army US Air. These glasses should be light and large enough to cover the entire field of vision when they flew in bright conditions, blocking sunlight and allowing unparalleled clarity at low altitude flight.

The Air Force wanted them to reduce headaches and nausea using colored glasses, as well as avoid the drops of sweat that could fall from the forehead down to the eyes of drivers, and in 1936 the first prototype was ready. The first frames “anti blinding” were green plastic and because of the success in trials, they were made of metal and famous Ray Ban Aviator – an iconic design that is still used around the world.
